Background & Qualifications
I am Dr Alastair Keddie, a qualified teacher and full-time online maths tutor with a PhD from Imperial College London. I have classroom teaching experience in an OFSTED-rated Outstanding secondary school where I was also Head of Maths for Key Stage 3 (ages 11-14) and Key Stage 4 (ages 14-16). I have taught 8,000+ online lessons with a proven track record of helping A-Level and IB students boost their grades and secure places at top universities including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial. My calm, structured approach builds confidence, sharpens exam technique, and delivers results.
I specialise in A-Level Maths, Further Maths, IB Maths and university entrance preparation, supporting motivated students aiming for strong grades and competitive university courses. My tuition is structured and exam-focused rather than a general homework-help service. I also offer targeted preparation for students approaching important examinations.

What I Teach
My main specialist areas are A-Level Maths & Further Maths and university entrance exams. These are covered in more detail on the relevant tuition pages.
In addition to these, I also teach:
IB Maths
Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI) at Standard Level and Higher Level, with a focus on strong mathematical understanding and exam technique.
GCSE and IGCSE
All exam boards covered, with an emphasis on strong foundations, clear methods, method marks and timing under exam conditions.
Maths Challenge
I help students prepare for the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenge, developing strategic approaches and problem-solving skills beyond the standard curriculum.
School Admissions Tests
Preparation for 9+, 11+ and 13+ maths admissions tests. These papers can be highly time-pressured, so success is not always about writing every calculation in full. I teach students to spot efficient methods, use estimation and make intelligent use of multiple-choice structure where appropriate, while maintaining accuracy.
Teaching Approach
Maths Coach
- I guide revision between lessons to maintain momentum and avoid last-minute stress.
- Targeted homework is marked outside lessons, keeping lesson time focused on teaching and higher-value practice.
- Exam technique and time management turn knowledge into marks under pressure.
- Practical checking routines help catch errors quickly and build confidence.
Human over AI
- AI can show steps; I diagnose misconceptions so the same mistakes do not keep recurring.
- I build habits that transfer between topics, making unfamiliar questions more manageable.
- I prioritise revision around your exam board, timing and the areas with the greatest mark potential.
- Families have a consistent tutor to contact between lessons when questions arise.
Tools I Use
- Zoom or Microsoft Teams for reliable live lessons and screen sharing.
- Shared OneNote keeps notes, examples and homework together and available 24/7.
- Interactive OneNote lets me see your working in real time and correct mistakes immediately.
- A custom question builder provides targeted exam practice matched to the areas you need.

Who This Tuition Suits
Tuition works best when students are willing to practise between lessons. I set targeted homework, mark it outside lesson time and use the results to shape what we do next.
- Students should be prepared to complete the homework I set and share it with me for marking.
- Parents can help keep the routine on track, and I am happy to provide progress updates when useful.
- The strongest progress comes from regular lessons combined with short, consistent practice.
This is structured, exam-focused tuition, with targeted support available for students approaching important examinations.
