Knowing the Maths Is Not Enough
TMUA and ESAT place strong students under significant time pressure. The aim is not only to solve difficult questions, but to recognise efficient routes, avoid unnecessary working and make good decisions about where to spend time.

How the Sessions Work
Before the Course: Short Diagnostic
Students complete a short assessment covering prerequisite skills and a selection of TMUA or ESAT-style questions. This helps me identify current strengths, target the lessons effectively and, where possible, place students with others at a similar stage of preparation.
First Session: How to Approach the Test
We use the diagnostic findings to identify the main priorities, then cover the structure and challenge of the paper, how to manage the available time, how much working is useful and when to move on.
Speed Techniques
Short, practical techniques for common time-consuming tasks, such as solving simultaneous equations efficiently, factorising non-monic quadratics and handling combinations mentally.
Timed Questions
Students tackle carefully selected questions under realistic time pressure, rather than simply watching solutions being demonstrated.
Analysis, Not Just Solutions
We discuss what should have been noticed, the quickest route, where time was lost, whether answers could be eliminated and when it would have been better to move on.
About Dr Keddie
I am Dr Alastair Keddie, a qualified maths teacher and full-time online maths tutor with a PhD from Imperial College London. I have taught more than 8,000 online lessons and previously taught in an OFSTED-rated Outstanding secondary school, where I was Head of Maths for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
I specialise in motivated A-Level and IB students aiming for strong grades and competitive university courses, with students progressing to universities including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial.

The first groups are now forming. Tick every time that could work. I will use the responses to form compatible TMUA and ESAT groups rather than spreading students across several different days.
Why Small Groups?
A maximum of six keeps the sessions genuinely interactive. Students attempt questions themselves, compare approaches and receive direct feedback, while benefiting from seeing how other strong students tackle the same problems.
